Third album from the Kompakt discoteer promises to dispense with the vocals (mostly) and keep its eye on the dancefloor. Justus Köhncke's previous album Doppelleben was an unlikely blend of electro-disco and crooning, but the two sides of Justus look like they've now officially split: Köhncke now records vocal pop tracks as Kinky Justice, while Safe and Sound focuses on instrumental neo disco/balaeric dancefloor action. Right from the album opener Yacht, Justus' trademark disco universe rips wide open due thanks to it's brilliant "Slave to the rhythm" references. Three more pure disco bangers are to follow with Molybdän, Love and Dancing and the ecstatic Parage. What's new is a certain technoid rigor, a vehement approach to his music which is new to Justus Köhncke's oeuvre but wherever Justus takes you, his music never loses that soulfulness that emanates throughout his music. Beyond the disco crackers and floor shakers it's important we bring light to (It's gonna be) Alright, Tilda, Spukhafte Fernwirkung and the title track which confront the overall euphoric album vibe with a special enigmatic melancholy you may find in many Kompakt releases and of which lay a foundation for the album's undisputed highlight. Feuerland is a cover version based on an original from 1974 by Michael Rother who some of you might know for his legendary recordings with Kraftwerk. Justus beams Rother's synthetic kraut sound smack dab in in the middle of today's contemporary dancefloors.
