PELICAN BACK IN THE FRAME WITH NEW ALBUM!

Pelican_packNever content to remain stagnant over the course of their almost decade long career, 2009 finds Pelican has shifted gears once again. This year sees them on Southern Lord, a label which has long been admired by the Pelican camp; and they are also presenting a brand new 4th full length What We All Come To Need. This record is Pelican through and through and the apex of their creative aspirations. It is the album that straddles most confidently the fine line between adherence to roots and the mining of the unexplored, and this is the first time ever that vocals have appeared on a Pelican album (Final Breath).

In July this year Pelican ventured to Seattle to lay down a new album with Chris Common, who has helmed records for a variety of bands from Minus The Bear to These Arms Are Snakes. Eight songs were recorded over three weeks at Robert Lange, Red Room Studios, and Elektrokitty. Beautifully heavy results? You bet. As punishing as it is calming, What We All Come To Need is Pelican at their most inspired and sonically adept, delivering 50 minutes of weighty riffs and textured progressions in momentous succession. This isn't maturation as much as it is confidence and purpose, and the latter are stamped on every note.

Lending the record organic diversity are Greg Anderson (owner of Southern Lord, guitarist in SUNN 0))), Goatsnake and Engine Kid) Aaron Turner (ISIS), Allen Epley (Shiner,Life And Times) and Ben Verellen (Helms Alee).

What We All Come To Need is out on the 30th of October through Stomp / Southern Lord.

DJ SPOOKY TOUR AND NEW ALBUM ANOUNCEMENT!

DJ_spooky_packIt's been a while since DJ Spooky has released a new album of his own material, but this constantly and famously creative force, also known as Paul D. Miller, has been anything but idle. Over the last couple of years, Miller has shot films in Antarctica, remixed a controversial piece of cinema history, and produced two of MIT Press' top selling recent books. In his role as DJ Spooky, the recording artist and producer, Miller has worked with or remixed everyone from Metallica to Yoko Ono; from the Kronos Quartet to Killah Priest. Even the master of collage rock, Beck, remixed Dj Spooky for his first series of mixes online. Miller's most recent work was a series of compilations and remixes of Jamaican dub and reggae.

“The Secret Song” is DJ Spooky's take on the changing world of 21st century music, economics, and global culture. With material taken from collaborations with people as diverse as Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, to Vijay Iyer, old school African hip hop legends Zimbabwe Legit, stunning turntablism with Rob Swift the legendary leader of the turntablist crew The Xecutioners, to political hip hop from The Coup, The Jungle Brothers, Mike Ladd, Iran's Sussan Deyhim (who sings in Farsi), and Abdul Smooth from India.DJ Spooky connects the dots between jazz, classical music, and the struggle to create new, dynamic relationships between old school hip hop and the 21st century's rapidly changing info-culture landscape.

DJ Spooky will be stopping by Australia for a one off gig in Melbourne's The Espy on Saturday 7 November 2009, promising a live visual and audio experience that is guarenteed to blow you away. For tickets go to www.espy.com.au

DJ Spooky 'The Secret Song' will be released on the 20 November 2009.

GRAHAM COXON FROM BLUR RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM!

Graham Coxon.bmpGraham Coxon has remained one of the most influential and inspiring guitar players and songwriters of the last quarter-century, whether through his immensely eclectic and challenging solo material or role within Blur.

The Spinning Top, Coxon’s seventh studio LP to date, is also his finest yet whether the folky blues shuffle of "Sorrow"s Army," menacing thrashes of "Dead Bees" or eight-minute daydream opus, and perhaps album centrepiece, "In The Morning." The album features 15 brand new tracks and marks something of a departure in sound and feel from previous Graham's solo work. It is also unusual in that the songs follow a narrative – nothing less than the story of a man from birth to death!

Graham says: “The album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action. I wanted to show how exciting acoustic instruments can be, how dynamic and rich and heart-thumpingly raw they can sound at a time when acoustic music seems either too cute or too soppy. Obvious influences here are the amazing Martin Carthy, the late, great Davey Graham and the late, great John Martyn”.

Graham's most intimate and beguiling work to date, The Spinning Top ploughs depths, textures and lyrical furrows that few of his contemporaries are still able to muster, especially this far down the line. Conversely, this is the sound of a man rejuvenated and refocused, ready for yet another flourish in an-already compulsive and vital career.

DEAD KENNEDY'S MAN JELLO BIAFRA BACK WITH NEW ALBUM!

jELLO BIAFRA.jpgIn the twenty or so years since his brainchild, The Dead Kennedys officially disbanded, Jello Biafra has made a career of spoken word gigs interspersed with musical collaborations with some of the most compelling figures in underground music. Recording projects and touring with the likes of Melvins, NoMeansNo, DOA, Mojo Nixon, and Lard (with Ministry’s Al Jorgensen) among others have kept his “punk as political weapon” message sharp, but the lack of his own band made these collaborations usually short-lived and left Biafra with a ton of songs that never saw the light of day.

Inspired by The Stooges gig on Iggy Pop’s 60th birthday in San Francisco, Biafra laid plans for his own 50th birthday party and finally decided it was time to start a band of his own. After cramming practices for a month, the four-piece dubbed themselves Jello Biafra and the Axis of Merry Evildoers! and featured Biafra, Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak Accident, Hellworms), Jon Weiss (Sharkbait, Horsey), and Billy Gould (Faith No More) The band took the stage in a sold-out two-night stand at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. Flush from that exhilarating triumph, nine months of rehearsal and writing followed; they added ace guitarist Kimo Ball (Freak Accident, Carneyball Johnson, Mol Triffid, Griddle), and christened themselves Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine.

The Audacity of Hype was produced by Biafra and engineered by hip hop producer and longtime co-conspirator Matt Kelley (Hieroglyphics, The Coup, Digital Underground, Victims Family, Tumor Circus) at Prairie Sun Recording in Cotati, CA, and San Francisco’s Hyde Street Studios. The band’s twin guitar attack retains some of the space-punk overtones and spy-music-on-meth chaos of The Dead Kennedys while adding a healthy dose of Detroit-style proto-punk flavoured with Weiss’ industrial excursions into metal percussion.

Topically, the album explores how the forced Iraqnophobia and Homeland Insecurity continues to feed lawlessness at the top (“The Terror of Tiny Town”) vs. a runaway police state and class war toward the bottom (“Three Strikes” and “Electronic Plantation,” originally done by The No WTO Combo, Biafra’s one-off collaboration with Krist Novelselic and Kim Thayil). “Clean as a Thistle” becomes more timely every day as “family values” blowhards from Sanford to Berlusconi are caught in sinful trysts, while album closer “I Won’t Give Up” offers an Age of Obama anthem on how change comes from agitation from below, not from glamour and sound bites from the top.

Thirty years on, Biafra solidifies and expands his uncompromising vision and updates it for the new century, with a powerhouse band that promises to be a terrifying live machine. Jon Weiss’s brother Andrew (Rollins Band, Ween, Butthole Surfers) has filled the live bass position recently left vacant by Gould’s return to Faith No More.

The Audacity of Hype is out through Stomp / Alternative Tentacles on the 23rd of October

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS DROPS SEVENTH STUDIO ALBUM!

PUTS_carried away_packshot

Fresh off major festival gigs at Coachella and Bonnaroo (“Best Performance. Period.” – SPIN MAGAZINE), the highly acclaimed duo, People Under the Stairs are back on Stomp with their 7th artist album, “Carried Away.” Fans of PUTS’ records know that unlike other hip hop / rap artists, there are no outside producers or of-the-moment guest emcees.  People Under the Stairs are a completely true independent hip hop duo.  Beats, rhymes, scratching, and chorus are all done by PUTS’ members Thes One and Double K themselves. Now over ten years and seven albums deep, People Under the Stairs have built a genre within hip hop of their own.  Upbeat, crazy, balls to the wall and ridiculous “Carried Away” follows in true PUTS tradition.  The new album was produced old school style in the same fashion as Rick Rubin (Def Jam Era) or Dust Brothers (Grand Royal, Pauls Boutique).  Recorded entirely on reel to reel with tons of rock samples, distorted vocals, lots of cussing, drum machines, delays, yelling, the works.  Wrap that all up with nods to A Tribe Called Quest (Double K does one hell of a Phife Dog), Beastie Boys, Beer, and Luther Vandross and you’re guaranteed to get carried away!

The 1st pressing of the physical release will be wrapped around a die cut O-card and a fold out board game and poster.  Each CD also comes with a special VIP (Very Important Partier) drop card that will allow fans to acquire exclusive material at the upcoming People Under the Stairs World Tour kicking off in September (stay tuned for Australian dates in early 2010 on www.stomp.com.au).  For those who are not able to attend a PUTS show, the VIP drop card will also be good for exclusive online unreleased material.  All these items craft a certified premium physical package that no true fan can deny! Be prepared for People Under the Stairs to bring back true hip hop like only they can do!

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS WILL DROP CARRIED AWAY ON 16 OCTOBER!

LUCIANO - TRIBUTE TO THE SUN CD/DVD

Luciano_tribute_sun_packshotThe album - Tribute to the Sun

It's been nine years since Lucien Nicolet's first record, and in that time he has earned his place among electronic dance music's most celebrated names. He's racked up singles for the likes of Mental Groove, Perlon, Desolat and of course Cadenza. He's remixed everyone from M83 to Salif Keita, and his mix CDs for Fabric and Soma's Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi. series have showcased minimal house and techno at their most sensual, supple and jubilant. And Luciano's DJ sets have become the stuff of legend the world over.

Tribute to the Sun is above all a highly personal portrait of the artist. Informed by the ups and downs of the artist's life, and the balancing act between life on the road and the refuge of family life in rural Switzerland, its moods run from the heavenly grace of "Celestial" to the outright madness of "Metodisma." This is the fullest portrait yet of Luciano as not just an artist but a human being.

Four years in the making, the album finds Luciano collaborating with a cast of musicians as talented as they are diverse. Martina Topley-Bird, of course, is known for her haunting contributions to Tricky's early classics, as well as for her solo career and collaborations with the likes of Danger Mouse and Mike Patton. Senegal's Ali Boulo Santo, heir to a long line of griots and nephew of the legendary "King of the Kora" Soundioulou Cissoko, was said to be "born with a Kora in his hands"; he pioneered an electronic fusion of Mandingue Afrobeat in his recordings for Frédéric Galliano's Frikyiwa label, and here his contributions continue to expand the possibilities for "world" music in new contexts. Switzerland's Bruno Bieri is the inventor of the Hang, a kind of steel drum with a sound like a mountain stream; "Hang for Bruno" features both his limpid melodies and the contributions of the Israeli percussionist Omri Hason, a student of the Iranian master Djamchid Chemirani. Omri Is also part of Luciano’s live project Aether.

THE FILM : La Ruta Del Sol - Luciano’s Diary
Underscoring the significance of the album, Tribute to the Sun will be released as a special CD/DVD package. On the DVD, Swiss director Raphaela Sibilla documents Luciano's last South American tour in a 52 minutes film called La Ruta Del Sol - Luciano’s Diary. Following him for three weeks through Lima, Buenos Aires, São Paulo and of course Santiago de Chile, the city so crucial to Luciano's musical origins.

The documentary introduces fans to the musician in a way they have likely never have seen him before. On stage, behind the decks, behind the scenes and on the road, this intimate portrait of the artist makes the perfect complement to an album that's as much a personal as a musical milestone.

THIS IS DRUM & BASS MIXED BY HIGH CONTRAST & LONDON ELECTRICITY.

High_COntrast_This_DNB_packshotTwo of the hottest dj / producer names in DnB, Hospital Records main men High Contrast and London Elektricity, team up and sign off a year of massive remixes and releases with this year's definitive, upfront drum and bass mix. Featuring DnB anthems, huge remixes of big crossover artists and exclusive tracks, This is Drum + Bass will be a key new brand launch setting the standard for similar albums.

The name High Contrast needs no introduction anymore; though when a young Lincoln Barrett signed on the dotted line back in 2000 he was a complete unknown. Signed on the strength of his mini-disc demos, the Welsh wonder has smashed his way through the d+b scene in no time at all. His debut longplayer, 'True Colours', was released on Hospital to massive critical acclaim in June 2002, paving the way for a move onto the international DJ circuit and helping him become remixer of choice for so many labels inside and outside of the drum+bass community. It was the club sessions and mixing skills that dominated the year since his debut- with Lincoln making a name for himself as one of the hottest D&B DJs around.

In autumn 2004 we dropped the massive 'High Society' LP; featuring the anthemic singles 'Twilights Last Gleaming' and 'Racing Green'. The album has already become the stuff of legend, with Knowledge Magazine voting it into there top 3 jungle albums of the last 10 years. More recently after reaching Drum & Bass superstardom he has releaed mix albums for Fabric and Mixmag and seen his White Stripes remix all over Radio 1. Missy Elliot and Blaze have also come knocking for a Contrast remix and the worlds dance floors have been blown apart by his 'Gold Digger' bootleg.

2007 saw the High Contrast success story continue, with the gargantuan single 'If We Ever' all over Radio One, followed by arguably his finest album yet, Tough Guys Don't Dance. Rounding the year off with yet another huge remix - this time of Axwell's Ibizan anthem 'I Found You', and his DJing skill saw him scoop BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix of the year, no less. Riding high on the wave of success following Tough Guys, it was straight into 2008 with huge remixes of Utah Saint's 'Something Good', Adele's 'Hometown Glory' and Eric Prydz's monster hit 'Pjanoo'.

With High Contrast sitting firmly at dance music's top table, 2009 sees him rocking a superclub near you. Headlining Hospitality at London's huge Matter nightclub and coming through with more daring and genius drum and bass. Expect the unexpected as High Contrast looks to keep things fresh in 2009.

I LOVE TECHNO MIXED BY CROOKERS!

Crookers_press_shotJoining the ranks of recent I LOVE TECHNO mixes from Boys Noize and Dave Clarke, Italian DJ duo Crookers now provide us with a new live mix to add some bass heavy skewed madness to the occasion. Featuring the likes of Photek, Jesse Rose, Fever Ray, Jahcoozi, Zomby, Osborne, Rustie, Metronomy and the massive Crookers hit ‘Knobbers’ we find the massive Belgian event adding a new element to their bastion of all things electronic.

The hot fuss surrounding Crookers is about to reach fever pitch. Already the hippest act in dance circlesthey will soon unleash their debut album on the world and things are expected to go mad for the two men from Milan. Their remix of Kid Cudi’s 'Day ‘n’ Night' reached number two in the UK earlier this year and is now riding high on the US Airplay charts. This, and their already huge body of work, has attracted the attention of Kanye West and Will I Am who have become fans and collaborators. Dolce & Gabbana recently used their U2 remix for the catwalk and their MySpace page is getting more traffic than Coldplay. Like we said, Crookers are about to go boom!

Crookers started in 2003 when two DJ’s, nick-named Phra and Bot, met and paired up over a shared love of hip hop, house and the emerging skewed, bass heavy sounds pioneered by Switch in the UK and Diplo in the States. “We decided to call ourselves Crookers to describe what we do. To make beats and tracks that are not straight up, that are twisted or crooked.” Their first release 'End 2 End', was released in 2006. But it was with 'Love To Edit' in 2007 and 'Knobbers', for their current label Southern Fried, when they really made an impact with peers and a burgeoning fan-base. There’s footage on You Tube of their appearance at I Love Techno last year that captures 10,000 people singing the riff to 'Knobbers'. Phra recalls it as the pinnacle of their DJ gigs so far, “It felt like nothing else, because people were there for us and knew all our tracks so it was very personal.”

Their rising status was confirmed with over two dozen remixes including club smashes for Dusty Kid (The Cat) and Kid Cudi (Day and Night) and their services have also been called on for A-list stars to crook out The Chemical Brothers, U2 and Moby.
After remixing such huge names in pop and rock Crookers have now gone direct to some of their favourite artists to work alongside on their debut album. Aptly titled, Tons Of Friends, the roll call of pals involved is jaw dropping.

It includes, Kelis, Soulwax, Major Lazer, RadioClit, Spank Rock, Pitbull, Tim Burgess, Kardinal official and Roisin Murphy.
Starting off with the futuristic house vision that is Photek we then find the Milanese duo threading together the big house sounds of Jesse Rose, the dub bassed throb of Oliver$’s remix of Jahcoozi, the thrusting dub step grooves of Rustie and Zomby, Osborne’s spectral techno and the pair’s own remix of Fever Ray. With Brodinski appearing twice alongside Noob and then Mumdance as well as Crookers massive hit ‘Knobbers’ that has already set I Love Techno alight, Crookers deliver their unique, bass heavy sound.Taking place on the 24th of October, this year’s I Love Techno is held at the Flanders Expo in Ghent and as ever is expected to attract some 35,000 people across 5 rooms making it Europe's leading indoor dance event.

Tracklisting

1. Photek – Glamourama
2. Emvee – Glitch Dub
3. Nadastrom – Ghetto Pass
4. Osborne – The Count

7. Jahcoozi – Watching You (Oliver$ Remix)

BALANCE 15 MIXED BY WILL SAUL

Balance_WIll_Packshot
Since its inception in 2001, the Balance Series has showcased the diverse and upfront sounds of frontrunners like James Holden, Chris Fortier, Desyn Masiello, Paolo Mojo, Jimmy Van M, S.O.S Collective, and Lee Burridge. Now hot on the heels of Joris Voorn’s stunning 100+ track instalment; EQ Recordings returns to the global stage in October 2009 with Balance 015.  With a proud reputation for securing sublime, forward-thinking DJ’s that best represent the ever-changing nature of dance music and the shape of things to come; it’s little wonder that as the Balance Series has grown in notoriety over recent years, so too has the interest from fans and artists in who will be chosen to take control of the next groundbreaking mix.

And so, without further ado, Balance is extremely pleased to announce that the UK’s master of the Deep, Will Saul, has accepted mixing duties for Balance 015. Since entering the picture with a prodigious victory in Muzik Magazine’s coveted ‘Bedroom Bedlam’ mixtape competition back in 2000, Will Saul has risen through the ranks of the dance music elite to firmly establish himself as a DJ, Producer and A&R Manager of premium quality and repute.

As a DJ, Will’s trademark penchant for the deep, melodic and hypnotic realms of ‘discohousetechno’ have seen him traverse the planet on tours and hold key residencies at London clubbing institutions like The End and Cable. As a producer, Will’s insatiable appetite for forging infectious grooves intertwined with deep, lush audio scapes has seen him not only forge a high-end catalogue of originals to date (including ‘Tic Toc’, ‘Fast Lane’ and ‘Love The Scary’), but earn remix duties for fellow kings of the underground like Phonique, Jesse Rose, Marc Romboy, Manuel Tur and Steve Lawler. And, as an A&R Manager blessed with years of invaluable experience at Sony International, Will is the proud and successful founding owner of two of the industry’s eminent, most respected imprints, Simple and Aus Music

Hallmarked by an unwavering commitment to allowing its chosen artists the creative freedom and musical integrity to present a mix that truly reflects their hearts, minds, souls and sounds; Balance is devoted to bringing listeners, fans and followers unique mixes and sonic experiences that capture the spirit of a moment and stand the test of time … Will Saul’s Balance 015 will be no different. Indeed, with Will at the controls, Balance 015 promises to epitomise the spirit of the series to date, embody its ethos and, of course, have fans dancing for hours on end – today, tomorrow and well beyond …
The countdown has begun.

WHY? AUSTRALIAN TOUR

why_eskimosnow_packshot

A year and a half after releasing the acclaimed Alopecia LP, WHY? returns with their fourth album, Eskimo Snow. The two records are each other’s perfect foil: While last year’s release found Yoni Wolf and the gang delivering a tight set of intricate rhymes, live loops, slurred hooks and acerbic wit, Eskimo Snow offers a sung, sobering take on mortality that unfurls in lush waves of Americana and pop-infused psych-folk.

Pre-mixed in Nashville by Lambchop’s Mark Nevers (Silver Jews, Bonnie Prince Billy, Calexico) and worked over by Alopecia engineer Eli Crews, this album is WHY?’s most live-sounding yet – a shadowy and sprawling piece as intimate in subject matter as it is handsome in timbre. WHY? actually recorded Eskimo Snow at the same time as Alopecia, at Minneapolis’ Third Ear studio, with Fog’s Andrew Broder and Mark Erickson rounding out a live quintet. The vision for two separate albums emerged on a snowed-in night after a hot toddy or two. If Alopecia, however inexplicably, maintains a summery tone, then Eskimo Snow captures the bite and resignation associated with the Midwestern winters that these Cincinnati boys grew up with.
On their maiden Australian voyage, WHY? will perform in full five piece glory.

A BOY'S OWN ODYSSEY - ACID HOUSE SCRAPES AND CAPERS

JBO_packshot

Junior Boys Own; a label that not only defined what British dance music actually sounded like but also what it should sound like. These are not just great records, or even great house records, but they also evoke something that is embedded in British culture.”

Bill Brewster author of ‘Last Night a DJ Saved My Life’

If you are unfortunate enough to be under 30 then you may never have heard of Boys Own, or Junior Boys Own (JBO) as their record label were fondly called. Just as Knuckles at The Warehouse and Levan at The Paradise Garage can be credited with kick-starting the House revolution in the US, the JBO crew were equally as instrumental in establishing the underground movement in the UK. They ran the first documented outdoor Acid House parties and were the first people to put a bouncy castle next to a DJ booth. They existed as the cornerstone to contemporary clubbing culture in London. These four young men – Terry Farley, Andy Weatherall, Steve Maize and Cymon Eckles – literally set the scene for you to dance. If you’re into The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, X-Press 2 or Andrew Weatherall then you owe these guys a big debt of gratitude. Artists that went on to international superstardom cut their teeth on the label by being part of the scene, learning their skills and perfecting their sound. This was the label that started the transformation of some of the most celebrated DJs and producers in the world from geeky club kids to the titanic artists that they became.

“Everyone signed to JBO were either our good friends or friends of friends, or they were clubbers; Ed and Tom (Chemical Bros) were just kids who went to ‘Most Excellent’ in Manchester; Darren Emerson was a DJ at the Milk Bar on a Monday Night; Xpress2 – Rocky and Diesel were just two kids from Hayes who were faces – young kids who were at ‘Charlie Chester’s Flying night.”  - Terry Farley

So why are we telling this you might reasonably ask? Well, they collective are celebrating their 20th birthday in 2009. All those kids that were involved in their 20’s have now grown up, but the spirit of the era lives on for them, and the music is available to whole new generation of clubbers and dance music fans alike. From their first release Bocca Juniors ‘Raise’ (63 Steps to Heaven) who’s video was shot by Wiz, the infamous director of the cult short film ‘Weekender’, through to Terry Farleys re-rub of Primal Screams ‘Loaded’ and their release of DSK ‘What would we do’ , recently borrowed by grime/pop artist Wiley for ‘Wearing my Rolex’ . Look out too for Underworld ‘Mmm… Skyscraper I Love You’ and The Chemical Brothers ‘Leave Home’, both early releases from the bands showing their fresh and emerging talent.
