NO AGE ANNOUNCED TO PLAY LANEWAY FESTIVAL

No Age

No Age, the Los Angeles duo consisting of drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall, have just been announced in the first instalment of the 2009 Laneway Festival line up! Their stark DIY art-is-life live shows are an exploration of possibilities: a guitar laid over a resonating drum head, effect loops woven together like beautiful harmonies, pop songs as performance art, a duo that sounds like the gale force of rock history delivered through a wind tunnel. No Age prefers to perform in unique venues: the LA River Basin, a public library, book stores, an Ethiopian restaurant, all to foster new ways to experience live music outside of traditional bar/club settings. This is the kind of band that inspires its audience without affectation, without cynicism.

No Age’s Sub Pop debut, Nouns, is succinctly all-encompassing, from the faux-simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound to the packaging that includes a 68-page full-colour book packed with photos and art pieces. In keeping with the title, the visual component depicts many people, places and things, all of which have particular relevance to the music itself. No Age issued a slew of singles on a variety of indie labels in 2007, resulting in the tellingly cohesive compendium, Weirdo Rippers later that year. That widely heralded release set the stage for Nouns. Recorded by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound from October to December of 2007, the album opens with a symphony of noise (both Dean and Randy use samples alongside their main instruments) and creeps and/or smashes through a sonic headlock befitting Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, power pop, My Bloody Valentine, and experimental noise.

AMON AMARTH RELEASE 'TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD' - OUT NOW THROUGH METAL BLADE / STOMP

AA_logoIn the spring of 2008, almost exactly two years after the last time they began recording, AMON AMARTH returned to Bogren's studio in Örebro to show there was still room for improvement with Twilight of the Thunder God.

AMON AMARTH's songs have become more varied than ever, incorporating the roots of death metal as well as showing openness towards different styles. Up to now, the Norse themes had provided the only connection with the traditional scene of their hometown. This time Johan sings a duet with L.G. Petrov, the only true Entombed singer, on the mid-tempo scorcher "Guardians Of Asgaard".

The title track and "Where Is Your God?", the former an up-tempo hymn, the latter probably the most brutal AMON AMARTH track of all time, seem like the best letter of recommendation the band could have needed for the Unholy Alliance tour, which will take Hegg and Co. through Europe alongside Slayer, Trivium and Mastodon later this year.  "The Hero", on the other hand, continues to draw from the band's melodic potential. The well-dosed appearance of Apocalyptica's string prowess in "Live for the Kill" shouldn't put anyone off, since AMON AMARTH always retains their predominance, keeping the song together.

Check out the title track Twilight of the Thunder God on Stomp Radio here.

SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY HAVE A NEW ALBUM OUT NOW CALLED 'INTERVALS'

SeeYouNext Tuesday_coverTwo years after signing with Ferret Music, See You Next Tuesday are older and definitely not wiser, but are still pretty kickass.  Comprised of four unassuming guys from suburban Michigan, See You Next Tuesday has made another move forward in their progression as a band, this time stepping in to record their new album, Intervals.  Recording with Dan Kenny and Joe Cincotta at Full Force Studios (This is Hell, Suffocation, etc.) in Long Island, NY and mastering the record with Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed)  Intervals sees the band expanding on elements of melody, aggression, and time that Parasite foreshadowed.

Bassist Travis Martin remarked on the new record, “Intervals is the first album that the four of us have written together, since Fox joined the band only a couple of weeks prior to the recording of our first Ferret release Parasite. It is a more mature album and definitely darker sounding. The presentation of the album is also much more serious.  The funny song titles are gone, the jokes are gone, it has a different feel to it.”

Wrapped up with artwork by Chad Lenjer at Discordant Art, Intervals is Out Now through Ferret Music / Stomp.

THE ALIENS NEW ALBUM 'LUNA' TO LAND ON THE 1ST OF NOVEMBER

Aliens_coverThe Aliens make a welcome return with a brand new album 'Luna' on their own Pet Rock Records label. Luna picks up where their astounding 2007 debut Astronomy For Dogs left off, and sees the band continuing to explore the outer limits of sunshine pop, psychedelic rock and acid dipped electronics.

Recorded in a small Scottish village over the first six months of this year, the band have embraced their freedom from the major record label machine, and delivered an album that manages to outshine their widely acclaimed debut.

The Aliens have history - between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones were members of the Beta Band, along with founding member Gordon Anderson who departed after the first EP release and went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker. The three re-united in 2006 and embarked on a new musical adventure as The Aliens releasing the classic singles 'Robot Man' and 'Happy Song', and the stunning album Astronomy For Dogs, whilst touring extensively across the UK and USA throughout 2007.

UNEARTH BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM +TOUR

Unearth_themarchcoverIf you’re searching for brutal and aggressive metal, you’ve met your match with UNEARTH. Combining elements of hardcore, thrash, and extreme metal – while also never overlooking the importance of thought-provoking lyrical ideas and concepts – UNEARTH has steadily become one of the leading lights in heavy metal.

Look at the careers of all great metal bands, and there is a certain album that pushed the respective group to the next level. The March, the forthcoming fourth full-length from UNEARTH is bound to be that album for the band, as it contains all the expected elements from earlier UNEARTH classics, while also managing to drive their sound forward.

Vocalist Trevor Phipps claims "This is our most crushing record to date. We pulled back some of the speed on this album just a bit so we could make the tunes more pummeling." He added, "The record has everything we have brought to the table in the past, the thrash, stomp, groove, melody and classic metal elements, but the song writing continues to improve. We are all proud as fuck of this album."

Unearth have just been announced as part of the Soundwave 09 tour!!!  Catch them in February/March - dates below.

Check out the first track 'My Will Be Done' here on Stomp Radio

DEFECTED TOUR + ALBUMBRA PRESENTS DEFECTED IN THE HOUSE, MIXED BY SIMON SIGBY, SIMON DUNMORE & WEI-SHEN

alumbra_simondunmoredigbyweishen

Defected continue their Worldwide Clubland Adventures with the release of an Australia-only compilation in conjunction with one of the country’s most respected clubs, Alumbra in Melbourne.

Following a successful debut release, the Alumbra-Defected combination returns with an expanded format, helmed by Defected boss Simon Dunmore, Alumbra’s Simon Digby and the up-and-coming Wei-Shen. The triple CD (out on Saturday, October 25, 2008) features the latest club sensations alongside some deeper and cooler House music.

Home to many a rocking Defected In The House event, Alumbra has become Defected’s Australian base and has helped the UK-based label build the brand and it’s releases drastically within the Australasian territory. Simon Dunmore, DJ Gregory and Copyright have all headlined sold-out Defected parties at Alumbra, while DJ tours across the rest of Australia have spread the gospel of House according to Defected!

Simon Dunmore brings his decades of experience to a market in which international artists rarely mix local compilations. Dunmore serves up for this project a deluxe disc of some of Defected’s newest and most upfront gems in his trademark four-to-the-floor style. The man has mixed over 20 House compilations, making him undoubtedly one of the most prolific DJs to appear on CD shelves worldwide.

The head of Alumbra brings to this project his name which has been synonymous with dance music culture in Australia for over the past decade. Simon Digby headed his own label Wet Musik which specialized in percussive techno and was a brand of global repute. Countless appearances around Australia along with European and Asian tours saw Digby hone his skills.

The third disc of the compilation is mixed by Melbourne local Wei-Shen, who has steadily developed into one of the country’s finest talents. Under his production moniker The Usual Suspects, Wei-Shen has forged a reputation as an artist able to adapt to club trends while retaining his own House sound. Incessant touring around Asia and Australia help to keep Wei-Shen’s finger firmly on the pulse.

FLEET FOXES ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN TOUR

ff_vertical

Built on a love of acoustic and electric guitars, big rolling tom drums, mandolins, dulcimers, pianos, kotos, and most of all harmony and melody - Fleet Foxes have a rich sound that has in no short time taken the music-loving world by storm.

The Seattle five piece - who released their wonderful, warm and exuberant self titled debut album earlier this year - draw their inspiration from traditions of folk music, pop, choral music and gospel, baroque psychedelic, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, as well as film scores. They were one of the most discussed bands at this year's SXSW, and received plaudits from the likes of NME, MOJO, Pitchfork and the UK's Guardian newspaper selecting them as the finest new act of the festival and raving about their celestial four part harmonies.

Now it’s time for Australian fans to get their fix as the band venture to Australia for the very first time to play the Falls Festivals and some East coast club dates.

"A recording that is ethereal, intoxicating and totally compelling"  The Age Green Guide - 5 stars

MY DISCO TOUR HAS KICKED OFF - CHECK OUT ALL THE SUPPORTS HERE.

Artist Profile

My Disco are on the road again in support of their second album 'Paradise' released earlier this year. The October dates will be the band’s last shows of the year before touring Japan to promote the release of Paradise in special Japanese format.

The band plan to spend the rest of the year writing new material for album number three, while devising an extensive tour of the world starting in New Zealand February 2009.

My Disco is a Melbourne based collaboration between long time friends Liam Andrews, Rohan Rebeiro and Benjamin Andrews. Their second album Paradise was recorded in late 2007 by Steve Albini, at his studio, Electrical Audio in Chicago. It is the band’s most refined and minimal work to date. Structurally unique and recorded entirely in the analogue domain, it represents the band’s visceral live sound more than any other record.

BALANCE PRESENTS ELECTRIC O4 MIXED BY 'AGENT 86'

Electric_agent86There’s very few DJs that can hold a candle to Agent 86. Fact. Sure, DMC champs may have the technical edge, but then how many incessant tweak scratch medleys can a crowd take before losing interest? Put simply, 86 knows how to fill the dancefloor. Yet he’ll do it in such an obtuse way, you won’t notice any obvious anthems. An underground cut here, a lost classic there; before you know it, the floor is jam-packed. And he’s not even breaking a sweat.

A fixture of the Adelaide scene for several years, 86 was regularly appearing alongside stalwarts such as HMC and Angu$. Playing a mixture of tech and old school electro, he honed his skills on the Technics and placed several times in the DMC and ITF comps. After a move to Melbourne, he started turning heads in the urban scene, throwing down hip hop and R&B with all the trimmings. But it wasn’t long before he again demonstrated his versatility, starting long-running electro-clash party Roxy, which ran for many successful years.

Forays into production have proved fruitful too, with the release of his Greatest Shit EP back in 2004. The cut So Hot proved an underground anthem on its release and could be heard in all kinds of clubs by all kinds of DJs (little did punters know it could be traced back to a local cat). It still sounds fresh today.

Versatile, humble, a skilled technician and (more importantly) a great lover of music, Agent 86 deserves all the plaudits thrown his way. He makes the difficult seem easy, and does it with a joie de vivre not often seen in an industry veteran. Electric_04 is a perfect snapshot of his skills, melding myriad genres seamlessly while bringing beats to the boil.

BEN WATT'S STRANGE FEELING RECORDS TO RELEASE 'UNBENDING TREES' ALBUM

Unbending trees_coverHailing from Budapest in Hungary, The Unbending Trees are a trio, and specialize in sparse, brutally honest chamber ballads and slo-core pop. Discovered on MySpace by Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl) and signed to Strange Feeling the indie / alt pop sister imprint to his acclaimed electronic label, Buzzin' Fly.

Vocalist Kristof Hajos was a friar in a monastery at the age of 18, but was thrown out. Havasi is a revered Hungarian classical pianist and graduated at the Hungarian Music Academy. Bassist and programmer Peter Hary lives in the countryside in Kecskemet and loves New Wave, New Romantics and Gary Numan. Between them they have conjured up a raw and poetic collection of songs that make up their debut album, Chemically Happy (Is The New Sad).

Their UK acceptance has seen extraordinary things happen in their home country of Hungary with tracks like 'You Are A Lover' and 'Alfred's Lovesong' not only getting extensive radio play but also reaching the Top 10 on MTV Hungary, with relentless rotation of their low budget clips next to the pop and r'n'b hits of the day.

Everything But The Girl vocalist Tracey Thorn was so taken with the songs and their live performances that she accepted the invitation to guest on one of the album’s finest moments & lead single , 'Overture'.

There is a gothic luminosity to the sound allied to a European intensity that recalls perhaps Scott Walker, Tom Waits, David Sylvian and Leonard Cohen.

Chemically Happy (Is The New Sad) is raw and unflinching, unique and honest. Open your heart to The Unbending Trees.

Launched in late 2006, Strange Feeling Records is the sister imprint to Ben Watt’s acclaimed house and techno label, Buzzin’ Fly Records, and a new home to alt-indie and electronic pop.

“Buzzin Fly has established itself with a strong sound and roster,' says Watt 'but there is so much other stuff out there. I first made music as an artist in the early eighties and I feel we are at a similar point with surges of fresh energy in many genres that deserve exposure. The two labels co-exist with distinct thumbprints but will be run by the same team. It's an exciting time.”

Chemically Happy (Is The New Sad) is out on 18ths October. Buy it now.
