FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS SET TO FLY ONTO AUSSIE TELEVISION

fotc_sitI spose the only way you wouldn't or couldn't have heard of  Flight of the Conchords is if you were stuck under a rock somewhere, or too busy discussing why The 2nd season of The Boosh was way better than the third. But soon you'll have no excuses for asking 'Who's Brit?' The most anticipated series of the year is set to air on Sunday the 11th of May at 10.00pm on Channel 10.

The duo's first major international success came at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where their show received rave reviews and built up a solid fan base. They went on to host a radio series for the BBC and then came the self-titled series commissioned by the HBO. The sitcom premiered in the USA in June 2007, with the series revolving around Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clements as they try to achieve success in NYC. The show also stars Arj Barker, Kristen Shaal, and Rhys Darby.

In addition to the show, the band has just released the follow up to the Grammy award winning EP 'The Distant Future' with the conveniently titled 'Flight of the Conchords' (which, not at all coincidentally, is also the name of their previously mentioned television series). The album was produced by Mickey Petralia (Beck's Midnight Vultures, Ladytron's Light & Sound) in Los Angeles, New York and Wellington. The album sounds legitimate, and musically it’s incredible, but, as Shakespeare said, “Does it funny?” Happily, yes. If amazing, delightful and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment!

BAND OF HORSES GALLOP DOWN UNDER

Stomp are over the moon that Band Of Horses have accepted the invitation to play at Splendour In The Grass this August!
BOH_image1
The band, now a sextet, evoke the feeling of longing and hope with their woodsy, dreamy songs. Their music can go from raggedly epic to delicately pensive with fragile highs and lows.

Armed with a new line up and two amazing albums under their belt - last years Cease To Begin and the 2006 release, Everything All The Time - this will be the second time the band have graced our shores and the first time they've played to an Australian festival crowd.

MUDHONEY ARE BACK.

Mudhoney_ap08Worldwide lovers of the finer things in life are rejoicing at the news that Seattle’s Mudhoney (yes..you heard correctly), are back in action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band’s eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking!

Recorded in a scant 3.5 days (including overdubs) with Tucker Martine (who also recorded four songs on their previous album, Under a Billion Suns), Mudhoney went in armed with a batch of new material expecting to spend a fair amount of time getting it right. Bang—and bang again after some mixing—and a new album was birthed in record time, faster than anything else the band’s done to date.

The Lucky Ones is out May 17, 2008

Superfuzz Bigmuff Deluxe Reissue is out May 17, 2008

EMMANUAL JAL, SUDANESE WAR CHILD TURNED INSPIRATIONAL RAPPER

Emmanuel JalEmmanuel Jal doesn’t know when he was born; he doesn’t know exactly how old he is.  For a seven-year period beginning when he was about 6 years old, he was taken from his home & taught the skills to be a child soldier, fighting for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Sudan’s civil war.  He learned how to fire a machine gun before he could ride a bike & was put into battle carrying an AK47 taller than himself.  When he was 13, he, along with some 400 other “child soldiers,” courageously deserted the rebel lines.  Sixteen made it to the relative freedom of a refugee camp.  Jal was one of them. Music is what kept him going after returning to the “real world.”  Warchild is like a diary of his extraordinary experiences.  Mixing rap with soul with a world music vibe, Jal tells his incredible story in songs like “Forced to Sin,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” “Baaki Wara,” and the title track & single “Warchild.”  In “50 Cent,” he calls out the rapper for not offering a more positive message to his young fans.

The album was mixed and additionally produced by Grammy winner Neal Pogue (Outkast, Talib Kweli, Stevie Wonder, TLC).  A feature documentary on Jal’s experience, also entitled “War Child,” recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and is currently making the rounds of the major film festivals.  An autobiography published by St. Martin’s Press is also near completion.
Jal has performed alongside Razorlight, Supergrass and Faithless in Europe, toured the United States as part of the National Geographic All Roads Film Festival, performed at Bob Geldof’s “Live 8” concert and with Moby and Five for Fighting in the 2007 live concert film, The Concert to End Slavery.  He has garnered great press coverage including interviews with CNN, USA Today, Newsweek, BBC Asian Network, The Guardian and the Time online.  His music can be heard alongside Coldplay, Gorillaz and Radiohead on the fundraising Help: A Day in the Life album.  His music has appeared on three ER episodes and the feature film Blood Diamond starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  He also appears on Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur amongst the likes of U2, REM and Lenny Kravitz.

“I believe I’ve survived for a reason – to tell my story, to touch lives.” – Emmanuel Jal

Boogy Bytes 4 MIXED BY ELLEN ALLIEN

Ellen AllienLabel boss Ellen Allien presents volume 4 of BPitch Controls excellent Boogy Bytes series. Allien's mix follows on from her Fabric mix of 2007 and previous efforts from Bpitch Control label mates Kiki, Sascha Funke and Modeselektor.

Like those volumes, her mix is firmly planted in the club as she mingles glitchy breakbeats with elegant poppy vocals and elements of the experimental underground with twitches of electro and deep techno basslines.

Allien mixes up her favourite tracks from Ricardo Villalobos, Melchior Productions and Gaiser as well as newcomers Melon and Lucio Aquilina in between more kooky selections such as a spoken word intro from Berlin spoken poet AGF and the ballad Twice from Swedish indie-pop quartet Little Dragon.

The cover of the CD is another head-turning snap by photographer Axl Jansen as part of his "shaky heads" series.

Boogy Bytes Vol. 4 is out 5th April 2008.
